How to Play 2048: Rules, Controls, and Step-by-Step Tutorial
2048 is a sliding number puzzle on a 4×4 grid. You move tiles in four directions, and when two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one. The goal is to create a tile showing 2048. Here is exactly how to play 2048 from your first move to your first win.
Step 1: Start the Game
Open Play2048.app and press "New Game." The board starts with two random tiles (each showing a 2 or 4) placed on the 4×4 grid. The remaining 14 cells are empty.
Step 2: Learn the Controls
- Desktop: Press arrow keys (Up, Down, Left, Right)
- Mobile: Swipe in any direction
Every tile on the board moves in the direction you choose. They slide until they hit the wall or another tile.
Step 3: Merge Tiles
When two tiles with the same number slide into each other, they merge:
- 2 + 2 = 4
- 4 + 4 = 8
- 8 + 8 = 16
- ...and so on, up to 2048 and beyond
Each merge adds the new tile's value to your score. A tile can only merge once per move.
Step 4: Watch for New Tiles
After every move, one new tile (2 or 4) appears in a random empty cell. Plan around this — if the board fills up with no possible merges, the game is over.
Step 5: Reach 2048
Keep merging tiles until you create a 2048 tile. The merge chain looks like this: 2 > 4 > 8 > 16 > 32 > 64 > 128 > 256 > 512 > 1024 > 2048. That is 11 levels of merging.
Step 6: Keep Playing (Optional)
After reaching 2048, you can continue to chase higher tiles like 4096 or 8192. The game only ends when the board is full with no merges possible.
Quick Strategy for New Players
One tip that will immediately improve your game: pick a corner (bottom-right is easiest) and keep your biggest tile there. Use Down and Right as your main moves. Avoid pressing Up. This simple habit is the foundation of the corner strategy that top players use.
