How to Play 2048 for Beginners: A Complete Guide

2048 is a sliding puzzle game where you merge numbered tiles on a 4×4 grid to create the 2048 tile. It takes 30 seconds to learn and a lifetime to master. This beginner guide covers everything you need to start winning.

What is 2048?

2048 is a free, single-player puzzle game created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014. You slide tiles around a grid, and when two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one tile with double the value. Your goal is to create a tile showing 2048.

Controls

  • Desktop: Arrow keys (Up, Down, Left, Right)
  • Mobile: Swipe in any direction

Each input moves every tile on the board in that direction, not just one tile.

Basic Rules

How Merging Works

When two tiles with the same number slide into each other, they combine into one tile. 2 + 2 = 4. 4 + 4 = 8. 128 + 128 = 256. Each merge adds points to your score equal to the new tile's value.

One Merge Per Tile Per Move

A tile can only merge once per move. If you have three 4-tiles in a row and press Right, only two of them merge into an 8. The third stays as a 4.

New Tiles After Each Move

After every swipe, a new tile appears in a random empty cell. It is a 2 (90% chance) or a 4 (10% chance).

How You Win

Create a 2048 tile. The game continues after that if you want to chase higher scores.

How You Lose

The game ends when the grid is completely full and no adjacent tiles can merge.

Your First Strategy: The Corner Method

As a beginner, learn one strategy: keep your biggest tile in one corner. Pick the bottom-right corner, press Down and Right most of the time, and avoid pressing Up. This alone will dramatically improve your results. Read our full corner strategy guide when you are ready to go deeper.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Swiping randomly — always have a reason for each move
  • Pressing Up too often — this breaks your corner position
  • Filling the board — keep 2-3 empty cells at all times
  • Rushing — there is no timer, think before each swipe
