2048 vs Threes: Key Differences Between the Two Puzzle Games
2048 and Threes! look similar but play very differently. 2048 is free, open-source, and uses powers of 2. Threes is a paid game with a different number system and move mechanics. Here is how they compare.
Origins
Threes! was released in February 2014 by Sirvo LLC after 14 months of development. 2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli one month later as a weekend project inspired by the game 1024 (itself a Threes clone). 2048 went viral because it was free and open-source, while Threes remained a paid app.
Number Systems
- 2048: Uses powers of 2 only (2, 4, 8, 16, 32...). Identical tiles merge.
- Threes: Uses 1s, 2s, and then multiples of 3 (3, 6, 12, 24, 48...). The rules are: 1 + 2 = 3, then only matching tiles merge (3+3=6, 6+6=12, etc.).
Movement Mechanics
- 2048: All tiles slide as far as possible in the swiped direction. Multiple merges can happen in one move.
- Threes: Tiles only move one space per swipe. Only one merge happens per column/row per move. This makes the game slower and more controlled.
Difficulty
Threes is significantly harder than 2048. The one-space movement and split number system mean you need more precise planning. Most players find 2048 more accessible, which is a big reason it became more popular.
Strategy Differences
- 2048: The corner strategy dominates. Lock your biggest tile in a corner and build chains.
- Threes: Corner strategy is less effective because tiles only move one space. You need to manage the entire board more evenly and pay attention to the upcoming tile preview (Threes shows you what tile comes next).
Price and Availability
- 2048: Free, browser-based, open-source, works everywhere
- Threes: Paid app (iOS/Android), closed-source
Which One Should You Play?
